IS YOUR "FIRE" FOR BUSINESS GOING OUT?

Has the novelty of your new business worn off? Does it feel like "work" now? A daily grind? Are you bored? Perhaps the excitement of the early challenges has worn off? Has it become uninteresting? Has the fun gone out of it?

Let's face it, without stimulation, most things become boring and jaded rather quickly. But it is up to you to create challenges for yourself - create new goals! Brainstorm new ideas and put them into action. You don't have to just sit with what you've already achieved and wonder, "Is this all there is?" As in life itself, NO, that's not all there is! You can be and do pretty much whatever you set your mind to. With your business that means you can sit and be bored and restless or dissatisfied, or you can put the FIZZ back in your BIZZ!

First make sure you know what it is that excites and challenges you. Make a list. It could be testing yourself against untried and untested procedures, solving problems, or developing new ways of doing things, etc.

Once you know what challenges and excites you, next find ways to incorporate more of that into your daily business. Include it in your goals. Determine what you need to do to implement this new strategy - what steps you need to take now and in the future. You need to reassess how you think about your work and what you are doing - perhaps you need a change of focus too. Whatever you do must have meaning for you.

If you are in a line of business where this is more easily said than done, you can start with small things, like finding ways to complete your daily tasks quicker or more accurately. You can gain immense satisfaction from achieving even simple things - it is this satisfaction that gives meaning and purpose to everything you do, challenging or otherwise.

Hmm... this sounds a little like Work Yourself Happy... perhaps you should read the book! (Which, by the way, is not expensive - you can grab an e-copy (downloadable) for peanuts!) You can pick a copy up from here:

Writer's Block

If you are a writer of anything, if you aren't familiar with writer's block now, rest assured your turn will come. Ideas seem to dry up. You don't know how to end it. Or maybe you get caught up wanting to perfect everything as you go - which, by the way, is a sure way to stifle your creativity!

Whether it be a letter, a book, an article, an email... if you can't stop tinkering and tweaking it, or you are suffering writer's block, stop wasting time with it.

This doesn't mean give it up for good...it just means give your brain a rest. Put it aside and do something else for a while. Maybe work on a different article for a while. Maybe go for a walk. Knit a jumper. Read a book. You get the idea. You need to take your mind off it.

Sometimes when we are too close to the words, we fail to see what's wrong with it or even what's right, and we tinker for tinkering's sake. Sometimes, we are our own worst critics!

When you come back to it with fresh eyes, you will see what really needs doing to it, if anything. Chances are nothing needs doing to it. There are a million ways to write something and you can't use them all in the one piece, so don't even try. Go with what works best in whatever piece you are working on and if your other ideas are clamoring to be aired, write them in a journal so you can use them another time.

PRUNING THE GRAPEVINE

Whether yours is a large organization or a small business, grapevine chatter can make or break your business. "Sour grapes" with unprofessional, inexperienced attitudes can and will create havoc with rumors and stories. So, how do you deal with these people in your business?

  1. Keep your staff up to date with what is happening in your organization. The more facts they have, the less likely they will be to gossip and spread rumors.

  2. Make sure your staff know that you are concerned for their welfare and problems and feelings. Don't alienate them with a patronizing manner or feel that the members on the lower rungs of the ladder do not need to be kept informed, because it is at this level that the most rumors circulate.

  3. Use newsletters and bulletin boards to keep people up to date. Provide information to Departmental supervisors and ask them to ensure their Department is informed.

  4. Make yourself readily available to concerned staff members who need to talk or ask questions. Don't be intimidating and frighten them off - this is when they are most likely to go and chat to others. An open door policy encourages communication.
  5. If you don't have the answer to their problems or questions, be honest about it and find out the answer for them.
  6. Make sure your staff know their first step is to come and ask you for clarification of a situation or rumor before asking anybody else, who may not have all the facts.
Keeping the lines of communication open is paramount to stopping wasteful and detrimental grapevine chatter. If people know they can come to you for a straight answer, they will do so, rather than ask a fellow workmate and get an incorrect answer.

The same applies with businesses with whom you associate. Don't listen to industry "gossip" - get the facts from the people who will know.

The moment you suspect your staff are concerned about stories going around the company grapevine, that is the time to step in and put the story straight. Never be afraid to tell the truth to your employees and always keep them informed... you will be rewarded with their trust and support.

GET RESULTS WITH THE "RIGHT WORDS"

Isn't it annoying when you spend your days telling or asking people to do something and they go and do the opposite, or just plain mess up? Here's an example:

You know if you tell a child not to spill his glass of milk, that is exactly what he will do - spill his glass of milk! Why? Because he is focusing his imagination on his glass of milk being spilled! That is the mental picture you gave him with your request.

The same applies to situations where you are asking employees or co-workers, or anybody for that matter, to do something - you should endeavor to phrase every request in a positive tone and in a manner which allows for visualization of the desired outcome.

For example: instead of saying "If you're not here by 7, we'll miss the bus and won't be able to go." Say, "We'll be able to catch the bus if you get here before 7 and we'll have a great time."

Or another example: "If you don't finish that article on time, it will throw out our entire schedule and we'll miss the publisher." Instead, say, "We'll remain on schedule if you can finish that article on time."

See the difference? The mental pictures formed in your head with each different sentence make the difference, and it's all in your tone!

There's not enough hours in my day

"I seem to spend all my time doing….X… and there's no time for anything else!"

Ever said this? Ever felt there isn't enough time in your day to be and do all that you can or want to be and do? What with family obligations and commitments, working with clients, writing, teaching, training, marketing, housework, garden work… there just isn't any time left over for self-employed entrepreneurs to "have a life". You're working for everyone and everything else and you are so far down on the list, you just never get reached! Could be you are working in inefficient ways…

If this is you, here are 8 quick tips that might make a difference:

  1. First, start by being honest with yourself. Grab a pad and pen right now and do a "life assessment". The aim of this is to identify your priorities for each day of the week. Keep a list every day. the most important things should be at the top - if you don't reach the bottom, there's always tomorrow and let's face it, some of those things at the bottom may not be so important! Check this list weekly. If there is something recurring on your list that is never high up priority wise every day, but you want it attended to, you will need to find time to slot it in or consider hiring a VA or somebody to help you do it! The idea of "list keeping" is you get a very clear picture of where you are spending your time and can make sure you are spending your valuable time on things that truly are important. You know where to focus your energy. You don't waste time. You can make decisions more easily. You can determine just what things can wait a while or need attending to immediately. The thing is - don't just rely on your memory! Sorry… along with your hair color, your memory, too, will fade over time! So, write it down!

  2. Ever heard of the 80/20? It goes something like this: "80% of your success comes from 20% of your efforts". And you ask… you need to figure out where your most profitable 20% is and spend the majority of your time involved in those activities. Let's pretend you are a Coach… your most profitable activity is working with your clients and maybe looking at ways to increase multiple streams of income that don't involve your constant and active participation and time. So go identify yours!

  3. Get help! This might be difficult if you are one of those types who feels you must do everything yourself, for whatever reason! Try it. Hire an assistant - doesn't have to be a full time person - try out a VA. VAs (Virtual Assistants) come in all shapes and sizes and guises and specialize in different tasks and have different fees. Ask about their pricing for certain activities. Shop around. And don't be fooled into thinking the most expensive VA is necessarily the best! Ask for references.

  4. Automate as much as possible in your business. Technology is aimed at making our lot easier in life. This can include things like using a voicemail program or using your email via your cell phone. It might mean learning about and using autoresponders for your emails. If you are not technically minded you can hire professionals and VA's who can set this all up for you. The beauty of it is once it is set up, you don't need to worry about it again. You don't have to have brand new equipment either. You can buy second hand or consider leasing things you really need.

  5. Simplify your life! Here's an example. Do you spend time chasing folks who promise to pay by check or via paypal? Why not insist on credit cards and use an online merchant for processing credit card charges? By doing this you don't have to move from your chair to process payments oweing to you. No more trips to the bank. With an online merchant account you can also set up recurring payments so the charges are run through automatically each month until you stop them. How easy is that! And if you look at your business, I am sure you will find other ways in which you can simplify your life.

  6. You know how you can consolidate your loans or credit cards into one, thereby saving the hassle of having to pay each individual card/loan each month and all the extra fees that go with them? Take a look at your business and see what and how you can consolidate your efforts to save time. Do you have umpteen websites that need constant updating/attention? Maybe you can consolidate some/all of them. Ditto with newsletters. What places in your business can you consolidate your efforts?

  7. Get leverage out of everything you do - when you can. This means finding more than one use out of products or services you have already produced. Ask yourself, "how can I use this product/service again?" Look for ways to re-use existing products over and over again. Can you combine them? Can you tweak them slightly? Be creative!

  8. Group your tasks. Don't scatter your energies, thereby wasting your time. Do similar types of tasks together, for example, if you have a list of calls to make, put aside some time to do all of them. Maybe you have a lot of writing to do, or appointments to book. If you look at your business you will find many tasks that can be accomplished all at the same time in ways that do not scatter your time or energy.

In general, keep track of what does and doesn't work in your business. What types of things do your customers compliment you about or complain about? Do people make suggestions? Put aside time in each week to analyze your business and brainstorm for new, creative insights and ideas. You will find it much easier to discover new ways of achieving goals, simplifying your day-to-day tasks and consolidating tasks and maximizing the use of your products and services.

Of course, in this schedule you should also include time for yourself. Even if it is just for one hour a day. Find time for YOU!

TIPS FOR DESIGNING YOUR DAYS

Okay...so you want to know what I do...

Every Monday, I enjoy a day set aside for what I call a Design Day. On this day, for 4-6 hours, I focus my time and energy on creating the systems that support the creation and enhancement of passive income streams.

My view of passive income is money that flows in, while I am doing other things. I do set up systems that create the income to come to me and don't want to give the idea that I do nothing, light a few candles and clean out the file cabinets, and money rolls in. This is why each week; I devote a business day, every single week, to the systems.

On a passive income day, a design day as I call it, I monitor my current passive income streams - internet marketing, affiliate programs, joint ventures, cross-referrals, network marketing, etc. I see how they are working and how to optimize each to be financially productive as well as what systems can make them run with less effort and more results. I also spend some of the day looking for other passive income opportunities that resonate with me as well as those that add to my current passive income businesses. I investigate things like lead generators, technology, and other resources.

My goal in having passive income streams is to have ways of generating income while I am sleeping and not through my regular business of coaching, where I trade my time for money. I love taking what I enjoy and designing products and services that create passive income and I spend part of my Design Days doing this.

I enjoy these days immensely and love earning more income and having more free time, so I look forward to my Design Time to set up and expand my current income streams. Each week as I spend my Design Day on passive income streams, I create more money for the rest of the week, based on spending the 4-6 hours a week. I think of myself as a recording artist who goes into the studio one day and creates a great CD. Each week I may be on tour or on TV or promoting my CD - that is my Design Day. And every other day, the CD sales - my passive income - come to me while I sleep or do other things with my life and time.

You have to make time where you work ON your business and not just IN your business.

This is not wasted time. You focus on improving your business, not catching up with unfinished tasks. Look at your business in the same way a Consultant might. Be critical. There is much research you can do yourself if you cannot afford a Consultant. You can search the internet for what other companies, in other industries, are doing that you may be able to adapt or adopt for your business. You might find the answers to many of your challenges. Your business will not shut down. In fact, you will find these efforts will produce new ways of increasing and improving your business, and time spent on such things is never wasted.

Hey, I DO know what I'm talking about here! It works for me and it works for all my clients. Why don't you try it and see?

LIFE in the ENTREPRENEUR LANE

Most entrepreneurs I coach tell me that they want to simplify their lives. They are consumed with details, many of which don't seem that critical, yet still have to get done. They also say that they feel their lives are out of balance. They live separate business and personal lives and often feel guilt over not being with their families and friends more frequently.

Here are some tips that entrepreneurs I coach have shared as part of their success in building more success at less cost:

  1. Get rid of anything and anyone you are tolerating
  2. Get rid of clients that you don't enjoy working with
  3. Plan 1 hour a day of high-quality free time just for you
  4. Surround yourself with people who are talented and highly motivated
  5. Work to free yourself of interruptions
  6. Delegate non-money-making activities
  7. Get coached
As an entrepreneur, it is critical to simplify your life and focus on your uniqueness and what it is you want to create in your lifetime. Is it relationships, an organization, money, recognition, a new method? Don't forget your life purpose and your mission - before your business goals.

Next, begin focusing on slowing your pace and planning your days, weeks, months and your activities and achievements. Take control of the chaos, slow the activity and improve the results. Organize your work around teams. Those who are supported by others have an extraordinary advantage in all situations in life. Focus only on business tasks that others cannot do for you.

Got a goal? Great . . . now expand it, push it, grow it HUGE! Visualize it and articulate it to others and develop a framework to get results. Instead of focusing on marketing and sales as a singular item, focus on the creation of extraordinary value.

Learn to bring to others ever increasing value and you will have a powerful business. Transform your products into services, services to products, and products and services into a unique experience. This will differentiate you in the marketplace and allow you to be creative.

If you don't know where to start . . . hire a coach! That's what we're here for!

Who's the Boss? The Coach…or You?

Some people are put off the idea of hiring a coach in the mistaken belief that they will somehow be disempowered in the process. Coaching, one of the fastest growing professions in the United States, and indeed, throughout the world, is about empowerment - for the client! - and should never be mistaken for Consulting or Therapy. "You", the "client", are always in the "driver's seat". The Coach sits beside you. Your coach is there to help you be in control, to help you use your own power or to help you take back your own power, to be responsible for your own life, your goals, your decisions. It's always about "you".

Through coaching, people are able to get from where they are to where they want to be in both their business and personal lives much faster and easier than they normally would. Coaches view the entire person and situation with complete objectivity and without any attachment to the results. They help the client see new perspectives, learn the truth and gain the knowledge to move ahead and make positive, sustainable changes in their lives or their business. But it is always the client's decision. The power to move forward, make changes etc. always belongs to the client.

Coaching is not therapy. Therapy is about working through past issues and healing, whereas Coaching is about the future and helping successful people attain their future goals. Coaching is not consulting. Consultants typically provide their clients with specific solutions to identified problems and then leave the clients to implement the solution by themselves. Coaches work with clients to help them discover their own answers and make their own decisions. Then the coach supports the client while the client implements his or her decision.

Coaches have no "hidden agenda". Unlike friends and family, who often DO have their own agenda and DO want certain outcomes, (because they sincerely believe they know what's best or right for you), Coaches are trained to remain objective and do not interfere in ways that would rob the client of their "power". Coaches relate to their clients in a partnership rather than in the role of an expert or authority figure. Coaches help create greater clarity and an ability to make decisions that come from inside yourself, versus what the world may tell you that you should do or what you're expected to do. And it's never about what the Coach thinks you should do.

You hire a coach not because you want somebody to tell you what to do - because Coaches don't do that (well, not unless you specifically ask for their professional advice!) -- but because you want someone who's going to ask powerful questions that really get to the crux of the matter for you - you know, clear away the cobwebs in your thinking, who's not going to judge your answers, and who is not in any way, shape, or form, attached to the outcome.

You hire a coach because you want to come up with actions that are going to propel you forward and prepare you for the future and allow you to change in great ways, and exceed your expectations.

You hire a coach because you want someone who's going to help you with planning and goal setting and help you tap into different ways of learning and different processes.

You have your own answers about yourself and who you are, and a coach will really help you focus on your future and get in touch with who you are and where you are going. A coach will help you have a stronger way of being and a better human experience. A coach won't give you the answers, but will be your partner in helping you find your own answers - that is, answers that are right for YOU - and stay with you to implement those answers. But a Coach will never take your power - will never take control of your life - that's "your" job!

(It's nice to be the center of attention, yes?)

Competing Against the Big Guys!

David and Goliath... you know how it goes, and it makes starting up your business hard when you have to compete against well established organizations who are already set up to provide everything and seemingly have all the answers. Without doubt, the larger, well established company has it over you. By the same token, you can compete against them, maybe not on as grand a scale, but you can make your living doing what you love to do.

You may not be "significant" enough in "Goliath's" eyes to even notice, but perhaps the Company has noticed you and it would be worth your while finding out what, if anything, is said about your business. If you know what your larger competition is saying, perhaps implying that it is superior in some way to your business, you are in a better position to deal with it. Whatever you do, do not get into a slanging match with Goliath. You simply need to reinforce your own competence. People aren't silly... most are aware of the games some very large organizations will play in order to keep the lion share of the market, and they can spot integrity, or lack of, honesty, or lack of, and sincerity, or lack of, a mile off.

You need to emphasize the advantages your own smaller business has over Goliath - such things as personal attention, customers are not just a number, direct contacts with management, etc. People who appreciate this level of service and attention to detail will deal with you. Let's face it, who likes to be 'just a number'?

If your small business has employees, you can emphasize their education and business knowledge, in fact, any credentials they have which can "prove" you are equipped to offer exactly the same thing Goliath offers but with more personal attention. Your Sales people can provide more personal attention due to the smaller, cosier client base.

People can get "lost" in a larger corporation, and sometimes dollars becomes more significant than service, and it is for this reason, that smaller businesses will always find a market. So hang in there... there will always be room for you - you might have to work a little bit smarter, but isn't the end result worth it?

Stress Tips

I have a service I provide visitors to my site called "Terri's Treasure Trove of Tips". You can check it out here:
http://www.terrilevine.com/TTT.html.
Idea is you don't HAVE to pay for a full coaching session with me if you just have ONE problem/question you'd like a Master Coach (me!) to help you with.

I recently received an email from a very distressed mother which went as follows:

"This may be silly, but I don't know how to determine what is true stress or if I just overreact to everything. Or does it not matter as long as a person feels stressed no matter what the source? I feel overwhelmed most of the time, I am a stay at home mom, 3kids, ages 12, 3, and 1yr. I feel stressed by everyday tasks and events. Things that I think other people wouldn't react to. I am a control freak and pretty much like things certain ways, and I like a tidy house. I'm stressed by having to do it, but also feel stressed if I don't do it. What can I change or do to reduce these feelings, or how in the world can I make it work for me?"

This scenario is soooo common these days, but still, my heart went out to this poor woman who was trying to be all things to all people and do it all perfectly! So here's what I told her:

"True Stress is that state of overwhelm which affects you physically and mentally and renders one incapable of functioning without that sense of panic and urgency, an inability to relax. I suspect your need to control and have things "just so" is exacerbating your problem. Not all stress is bad. Stress is your body's response to any change in its inner or outer environment. Even good things, such as a promotion at work or a new baby in the house can create stress. It's when you are faced with one stress period after another, with no time to relax in between, it can affect your physical and mental well-being.

Here are some common symptoms of too much stress and not enough relaxation.

  • Fatigue

  • Sleeplessness

  • Irritability, anxiety or depression

  • A change in appetite

  • Headache, backache or chest pain

  • A noticeably negative attitude

  • Numbness

  • Feeling overwhelmed or out of control

  • Poor concentration

  • Little things bothering you

  • Frequent crying

  • Muscle spasms

  • Constipation or diarrhea

  • Shortness of breath

  • Difficulty controlling your temper
It may sound like a cliché, but techniques such as meditation, relaxation or even exercise does help reduce stress levels.

Take your mind away from what you are doing. Read the comics, take a walk. Take deep breaths. Take your 3 and 1 year old to the park, walk slowly and breathe in the fresh air. Find some time of the day to sit and soak in a long warm bath with a good book. If you can't get to a aerobics or exercise class of some kind (that has a creche), buy a video and do it at home. You have to have some special "you" time - this is not being selfish. If you are not feeling 100%, you are not going to be able to give 100% to your family - so you HAVE to take care of you first if you want to be able to take care of others. Investment-wise, if you want to look at it this way, YOU are one of the most, if not the most valuable "possession" in your family. Just look at what you do and achieve every day? Your family could not cope without you. Your husband would have to pay a small fortune to replace you with a full time child-carer/nanny, housekeeper and chef! It pays to take VERY good care of such a valuable commodity - yes?

It will take some practice but you need to relinquish the "need" for a spotless house - you have 3 children - any mother will tell you, children and a permanently spotless house just don't go together unless you have a full time house-keeper! Train your children to pick up after themselves. Know that this "messy" stage will pass one day… nobody is going to judge you if they have children themselves!

Sit down and make a list of the things you feel must be done to make you happy re your house and then schedule the tasks for the week, making allowances for interruptions along the way. Schedule in children time. Schedule in all the things you have to do. Now somewhere in that schedule, find at least half an hour just for yourself - possibly later in the evening when the children are in bed, or maybe you can get up a bit earlier before everyone else - but it's imperative you find time just for you. Buy one of those soothing meditation music tapes, put it on softly, lie on the sofa with your eyes closed and just listen and relax. I realize that for some people doing nothing is very difficult - but I also know you can do it!

You might like to try a herbal remedy - St John's Wort is excellent and can be found on most vitamin shelves in the stores.

Want to avoid the feelings of stress in the future? Try these tips:

  1. Get up 15 minutes earlier every morning so you aren't in a rush and can relax before leaving the house

  2. Exercise daily to unwind

  3. Eliminate the words "ought" and "should" from your vocabulary and make your goals things you really want to do

  4. Skip the daily news - it's full of negative events

  5. Drive slowly and enjoy listening to music while you drive

  6. Meditate or sit quietly for a few minutes every day

  7. Schedule plenty of time between appointments so you don't feel rushed
Life is filled with changes and challenges, many of which you can't control. How you respond to these changes and challenges *is* in your control. Your attitude can determine a situation or you can allow the situation to control your attitude."

So that was my advice. I'm waiting to hear back from her. I invited her to let me know how she fared following my advice.

And if YOU have one question you'd like my help with, go to: http://www.terrilevine.com/TTT.html

OR if you would like a proper coaching session, or many coaching sessions, you can contact my assistant Donna at Donna@coachinginstruction.com and she can give you the information you need or I can refer you to another Coach if you wish.

Enjoy your life!

Betty and Bob

I had an interesting experience recently. As you may or may not know I recently returned from a 2 week speaking engagement on a cruise ship! I met some amazing people. I also met 2 people who attended all my talks and each are charming individuals… sadly, put them at the same table together and world war 3 is likely to erupt! How have these 2 remained married for 15 years, I wondered?

Actually, I did comment on their success at having been married for 15 years and was expecting some form of recognition and agreement of that - imagine my disappointment when the wife said they probably wouldn't reach 16 years! And the husband didn't deny it.

I'll call them "Betty" and "Bob".

I really liked these two people and from an objective perspective, they had a lot going for them and stood to lose a lot if they separated. I managed to get them alone late one evening - we sat in the lounge and enjoyed a few social drinks.

I noticed that every time Bob said something, Betty would put him down or make fun of him or his comment. Bob didn't reply most of the times - he just wore a sad expression, and occasionally would snap back at her. Once he snapped, of course, this made things worse and Betty seemed to think this justified really hoeing into him!

I began to feel sorry for Bob, but as I got to know them more, I discovered that he, too, wasn't averse to slinging a little mud his wife's way either. It was a game, an unpleasant game, they both indulged in - why did they play it? It was obvious none of them liked it.

Betty said this was the reason they probably wouldn't see 16 years together. She couldn't take it anymore. Well, finally she had said something Bob agreed with. I let them talk it out, get it off their chest and I just sat their listening. Then Betty said to me, "You are so easy to talk to! I guess that's why you're a Coach!" So I said, "Would you like me to let you in on a little secret? A free coaching tip?" (A free coaching tip from a Master Coach? Are you kidding? Of course, they were both all ears!)

I gave them the nutshell version on the art of "listening". I reminded them of how they would have listened to each other when they first met - the respect they would have shown each other. I told them that they have no problem listening respectfully to other people - just with each other. I asked if they were up for a little experiment and they decided to humor me. I told them that for the rest of the voyage, I wanted them to stop slanging each other and to treat what the other had to say with the same respect they'd show somebody else, like me. I told them this new "game" would start right "now". So I kept them there for another hour or so and kept the topics light. We discussed the trip, the great photos we'd all taken and the wonderful new sights and experiences. I only had to remind Betty once that she had slipped up when she made a smart reply to her husband's comment about the food and the onboard gym.

I endeavored to meet up with these 2 almost every day, and they both surprised me by informing me that they were still trying the experiment. I knew they were good people, so really, I shouldn't have been surprised.

A few days later, we were sitting around after dinner and I noticed something rather wonderful had happened. Bob made one of his usual comments that in the past would have brought a smart reply and put down from Betty, but this time she just looked at him and laughed. He rewarded her with the warmest of smiles and I swear, their was a twinkle in both their eyes! But it didn't stop there. Betty commented on some weight gain she felt she'd experienced during the voyage, but rather than make a comment about her spreading midriff, Bob surprised his wife by telling her she was every bit as gorgeous as the first day he'd met her.

Look, not every couple can work things out as easily as this with just one little tip. But I did tell you I'd seen something special about this couple! However, this same, very basic and simple coaching tip is one that has salvaged many relationships. When you are with somebody for so many years, some of their habits or expressions can be annoying. You just have to remember that it is part and parcel of the person you fell in love with all those years ago, and try to imagine life without that person. Very often, some couples find that they would rather live with an annoying habit than be without the person whose habit it is. Very often the person with the bad habit is prepared to compromise and do something about their habit.

Great listening and compromise… the 2 things that make for a great relationship!

Ah, don't you just love a happy ending! Okay, that's a bit of a lie… I did hear them arguing about their luggage when we disembarked - they stopped when they saw me. Maybe I should send them my photo to stick on their refrigerator as a reminder!

Employment Outlook

On June 2, 2005 Monster Employment Index showed the job market improved in May 2005. This is a continuation of the 12-month trend we have seen.

As a coach to many people in the financial industry I noticed that finance and insurance was up 29 index points.

When you hear people speak of the job market and the grim stories you hear, I say, grab the data, and get the facts. Any story can be made worse by the press and others.

Always seek factual truth vs. coming up with truths based on what you hear or what others say. The truth IS in the numbers.

Enjoy the good news and always focus on what IS working vs. what is wrong!

My Daily Blissful Wakening

Several years ago I collaborated on a workshop with a wonderful healer who trained folks in Osho's Dynamic Meditation. I simply loved the process of doing this "Chaotic" Sun Rise Mediation and have stuck to it for years.

This single daily action awakens my spirit and amps up my energy and allows me to rid myself of any negative programs or stories. To realize the power of this mediation, you really need to engage it daily for 30 days.

This is unlike any other meditative process I know. The Washington Post said, "Osho advocated meditation for everyone, but his technique was revolutionary, beginning not with stillness and silence but with energetic activity to release pent-up energy and emotions, leading to a state of calmness in which meditation can flourish."

The meditation has five stages going from Becoming the Breathing, Chaos, Hammering "HOO", Freezing, and finally dancing in celebration.

It is my daily practice and I wanted to share that mediation can be what YOU make it.

Hiring a Career Coach

With so much change in the workplace and downsizing and demands from our jobs, it is no wonder people are flocking to coaching. People in growing numbers are seeking the advice and services of career coaches to guide them in job-hunting, starting their own business and improving work and life skills.

Career coaching is a booming field as coaches are specifically trained to assist workers by using assessments, asking probing questions and having a clear process for career change.

In the US alone there are well over 10,000 personal and career coaches (according to Career Development Quarterly) and that is up ten times from the mid-90's and still growing.

If you want a jump start on your career and finding a career coach, go to http://www.workyourselfhappy.com/ or email terri@terrilevine.com and she’ll send you a FREE ebook version of the bestselling book, as a Blog reader.

The Top 10 Ways to Get Unstuck

What do you do when you're mentally "stuck" and can't seem to solve a problem?

1. Journal about the situation.

2. Talk about it aloud with someone who is objective (like a professional coach).

3. Take a walk.

4. Diagram all possible solutions.

5. Create absurd solutions.

6. List every possible solution and then highlight the ones that make any sense.

7. Forget about it for 24 hours.

8. Use the creative side of the brain and draw or paint.

9. Write answers with the non-dominant hand to engage the opposite side of the brain in the process.

10. Visualize the outcome with all solutions and see which one works.

Arnie the Attraction Magnet

"Arnie" is a superstar-coaching client who I have had the privilege of coaching for almost 8 years. He is part of my Mastermind Coaching Club and a bright, fun, articulate and kind person.

He has used the Laws of Attraction, since "fighting" me a bit when I first taught them to him, to create a business bringing in about $578,000 this year in revenue; a new home; a vacation where he takes his wife, 2 sons and their wives and 4 children to Paris and London for 2 weeks; and also bought himself his dream car, a Porsche. I call him "The Attraction Magnet"

Today he had a not quite right show up by having his oldest son get laid off, on top of a major health crisis for this son's child. He was sad and feeling pain and fear.

I reminded him that things come to him; get attracted to him, when he is feeeeeeeeeeeeling best. That when he focuses his attention on what is working and what is right and spends his energy pulling in thoughts about more of what he wants vs. thinking about what he doesn't want, he creates his life experience.

I got him back to the present moment and asked him what he is grateful for right now. He gave me a list of more than 29 things. I also asked him to share with me for 3 full minutes, what IS working and going right and to be fully aware of everything he could think of. At the end of about a minute he stopped and I encouraged him to keep going and he did -- even past the 3-minute mark!

By the end of the session, he was back!

I believe, and the Universe has granted me buckets of evidence, that we get what we focus on. When Arnie focuses on being open to receive more of what he wants, he'll get it!

Successful Sherry

On a call with my client, "Sherry" she asked me tell her what I saw, as her coach, that made her successful. Sherry is trying to understand what her skills are so she can train and hire others in her department (Organizational Coaches) so they will be superstars, too. What a powerful question from a fabulous client and executive coach!

What I see in Sherry is that she spends her time developing others and deeply caring for others. She also has a friendly upbeat, fun personality. She is positive and invigorating to be with.

Sherry is also a deep, tuned in listener who can hear well underneath the words to discern what people are feeling - not just what they are saying. She has her own personal "baggage" well handled and by working with me as her coach, she has "put her own house in order" to be fully open to others.

She also catches on to information quickly, processes it and digests it fast. Sherry was also formal trained (proud to say, by my coaching kit!) and this training I believe gives her a leading edge. She is also open to learning from others and doesn't fight people trying to get her opinion across, but instead is open to other views and loves to hear differences and is willing to accept differences.

As I shared this with Sherry and we discussed it and created a way for her to look for superstar coaches to hire, I felt such joy in knowing Sherry and the honor of being her coach.

Don Dumps His Diet

Coaching my client "Don" today he was frustrated by his lack of dieting results. He spent money on fitness equipment, shakes, herbs and other things, with little results.

I encouraged him during our session to take a non-dieting mentality. Don was open to receive this information and we coached on why diets don't work.

He said for him a diet is a short-term thing to do for a while and once he is done, he always goes right back to his full eating. He also said he hates not being able to eat his favorite foods and feels deprived and like he is punishing himself from being "bad".

We then talked about his work which includes lots of travel and business meals out. He said he feels it is super tough to diet when eating out so much and for sure the shakes he drinks don't work when he has to travel.

So, instead we co-created his own personal flexible eating plan that he felt he could eat for life, that included small amounts of all his favorite foods and worked for his travel schedule. He wanted to eat healthy for life, but never knew how. I shared the concept of no food is a bad food and how to create a feeling of allowing vs. disallowing.

We created an eating plan just for Don and he dumped the diet.

"Connie"

Today, I am coaching my client, “Connie” and she starts asking me about becoming a coach. Now she is consultant for a big accounting firm and pretty burnt out on the travel, the demands, the hours and the lack of appreciation.

When we completed our session I began to think about who becomes a coach and I have noticed certain trends.

Consultants, whether in management or business, organizational, executive, marketing or professional organizers and others, are a great fit to move into coaching. They already have the background skills and experience. They love the high billing rate, few expenses, and find the work and clients more diverse and interesting. It is more comprehensive work or holistic where they can coach with their minds, body and spirit.

So, yes, Connie is a natural fit.

I also know that many coaches have a background as a speaker, trainer or educator and use their great skills sharing their expertise with clients.

Of course, all kinds of therapists (mental health, physical, occupational, speech, etc.) make perfect sense and have the background and find fewer hassles, no insurance to deal with or paperwork holding them back.

In fact, many coaches are ministers sharing their love of people and spirituality with others.

As I sat here I thought about the professional people like attorneys, chiropractors, doctors, accountants and others that become coaches. Many financial planners, as well. What a great way to add an income stream and do something else to broaden the work they do.

And managers and executives make stellar coaches using their skills in new ways and loving the ability to freely use their skills.

I personally have seen sales people and sales managers turn to being coaches and do very well at this field, too.

Anyway, I stopped to realize that my own client had no idea I had founded 2 coach training schools! I guess I need to share this more so people know more about the programs and can see if they are a fit.

Sally Super-Seller

This client, “Sally”, is one of the most successful sales people I have ever met, trained or coached. She has been number one in sales for an international company for 3 years running and makes an incredible income and loves her work.

Today, in coaching her to coach her sales team, I worked with her on getting rid of any myths her team might have floating in their heads. The biggest myth, we agreed, is that the sales person might manipulate or force someone to buy something, so they get scared and back down thinking they don’t want to do that.

We agreed that they need to understand that people only buy when they really want to and that no matter what a salesperson does or says, a person won’t buy unless they resonate with the product/service. In addition, she felt her sales team gets scared of using the company approach to sales, which works so well. She says they fear it is trickery, which it is not. If the company has a system that works, which is does, Sally decided she’d coach them to use it and use it “their way” so it felt better for them.

I love how she is using the coaching skills she is learning!

Sally has turned from sales manager to sales coach and this is working well for her and her team. She is teaching people to enjoy sales more and to learn how to sell without-selling. Sally has been successful in teaching her team to use their personalities and be comfortable in finding a process that works for them.

Sally set an action plan to coach her team individually and was excited about creating super sellers like her.

Loving Laura

All my clients seek to have healthy relationships with all of the people in their lives, from parents, to partners, to children, to co-workers and friends. There are some general guidelines for healthy relationships and today "Laura" and I were coaching on this topic.

The guiding principles we identified for all relationships all had tuning in deeply as their undercurrent. This means to deeply hear what the person and saying and more so what they are not saying and what they are feeling. It is about listening for the essence of their message and giving them your full and loving attention, as if nothing else mattered at all, just them. If you are too distracted by your own thoughts or what you want to say or by the TV, you are not tuned in and people don't feel connected to you.

Laura committed to use her ears and her body to listen to her children and parents in a much deeper and loving way.

Additionally, not judging what you hear. Instead giving the speaker the space to express their own personal thought, ideas and opinions and even if they are very different from yours, accepting them and being open to hear them.

Laura said that she often jumps in and tells people her point of view and even argues it sometimes. Instead she is going to work on making her manager and her own employee's right!

Laura also said she often is guilty of getting into heated phone arguments with her ex-husband. She says they fight all the time and never agree on anything. The energy of this drags her down and drains her, plus she doesn't want her children to hear her anger. She decided to be less judgmental with him and to criticize him less as this didn't help the situation. Instead of threatening him and giving him ultimatums she was going to stop the game and just speak in the charge neutral way she had learned in coaching.

She felt these new skills would challenge her and make all her relationships stronger.

Couples Coaching

Let's call my real clients "Ken" and "Barbie" to protect their names and have fun :) They hired me as they are considering getting married within the next year and don't want to be one of the many marriages that ends in divorce. They want to have the skills to communicate and fully relate and to maintain those skills as they mature together.

Both of them come from a loving, caring and sharing place. They also come from homes where both their parent's have been divorced (Ken's twice). They are enthusiastic and optimistic coaching can help them.

Today we talked about how they handle their feelings. Personal responsibility comes before we can be a "couple". "Barbie" prefers to speak about things when she is upset and "Ken" prefers to shut down. Understanding that each relates differently was a great starting point for our coaching.

"Ken" committed that instead of withdrawing, he will work on speaking more when he is feeling frustrated, stress, worried or upset. "Barbie" said she'd listen more and talk less. They co-created this arrangement and both felt good about it and committed to this plan.

When asked about how they approach things that are different which might "bug" them, "Barbie" talked about when "Ken" didn't clean up his breakfast dishes because he was running off to work, and she often ends up doing this and doesn't like it. "Ken" said that when "Barbie" criticized him for making a mess, he felt like a small child and was angry and hurt. As they talked more about this, both agreed the way they criticize vs. make requests was not right. I taught them the coaching skills of being charge neutral and marking requests. They enjoyed this and committed to learning these skills.

Living From Spirit Louisa

"Louisa" hired me as her coach to help her live from a more spiritual place. Her life has gotten full of clutter and has lost meaning, she says. She feels so busy with tasks and to do's, her focus has been away from being connected to the Universe and a Creator.

During our coaching sessions she shared that she drinks a lot of coffee each day and usually has a glass of wine when she comes home from work and then a high carb dinner. She decided to cut down on the coffee and alcohol and to eat more protein and high fiber fruits and vegetables, just to slow her self down and get back in touch with living more peacefully and joyfully.

Next, she was talking about the anger she has for her brother and has had for more than 20 years. I gave her an exercise for forgiveness and release that she committed to using right away. She is thinking about sending him a letter to let the past go as well. This will bring her more in integrity.

To feel more connected to each other, to the planet and to our experiences; trust is a bond that brings us together. She is going to think about whom she trusts, how she trusts, and how she trusts in the Universe as well. Louisa is starting an evidence journal where she will also notice what shows up when she comes from this place of trust.

And, we developed an EXTRAordinary self-care plan where each one, for one full day, 24 hours, midnight to midnight, she is going to forget about work, the do's, the tasks and focus solely on feeling good, enjoying living on this planet and feeling and doing what she loves.

Stressed-Out Susie

"Susie" has a full life. She just graduated with her Master's Degree in Psychology and at the same time is getting married in a month and moving from the east coast to the west coast. She is excited, happy and yet finds herself full of stress.

During our coaching we identified the stress as coming from her constantly thinking about things that "might" happen like: she might not find a job, something might be forgotten for her wedding, she might not like the west coast, she might forget to pack something important, she might not have money, etc.

We co-created a worry-less/stress-less plan. To begin the plan, each day when Susie thinks of thoughts that cause her stress, she is going to stop thinking about them and jot them down in a little journal she is going to carry around. She'll just jot down a real quick note. Then, once each day, at a set time, she is going to spend 20 minutes thinking and yes, worrying if she wants, about the things in her journal.

Next, for each item on her list, she is going to think about the worst thing that can happen and then what action she'll take if that happens. Again, she gets 20 minutes per day for this.

The goal? Have her begin to control stress by scheduling it and using her rational mind to remove it.

Business Bob

My client "Bob" hired me about a year ago to assist him to get along better with his manager and to have fewer problems with his own employees. He has learned coaching skills and been putting them to use with his employees and his manager. There have been fewer problems in his department. Fewer sick days, improved morale and fewer injuries.

His relationship with his "boss" is better yet he still feels she does not like him. We spoke about speaking his truth and communicating his feelings with her and about asking her for feedback. While Bob has many fears about this, he said he would take my help to push through the fear and just do it.

So, we used several belief shifting tools and then a scripting tool to help him get crystal clear on what his intentions were. Finally, I had Bob hold a practice conversation with me, as if I were his "boss". We then discussed what worked in that dialogue, what wasn't quite right yet and how he could make the conversation more right.

Bob decided that he was going to work on changing his beliefs and then scripting exactly how he wanted to feel and be in that conversation and what he wanted as the ideal end result. Finally, he said he'd like to role play it with me one more time the next day and then he'd speak his truth with her.

After Bob had done his "play work", he called me and we role played the conversation. This time it felt smooth and fluid and he sounded confident. He then went to work and asked "Marjorie" if he could meet with her. Later that day, they met and he did exactly as he intended and spoke his truth. She listened, as he requested. Then the discussed how he felt, how she felt and they co-created a plan to improve their communication, feedback and overall relationship.

He called me ecstatic about this and felt he had made a great stride in his career.

Nice going, Bob!

Network Nancy!

One of my clients, "Nancy" is a network marketer who works a full time job during the day and got involved in network marketing to make extra money. Her dream is to later quit her J-O-B and work her MLM business from home spending more time with her family and hobbies.

Today I coached her to see how to make the MLM business be less passive for her, so in 5 hours a week, she can earn maximum money from it. Most of the coaching was helping her to create a shift in her thinking from her selling the products to focusing her energy and creating a team of people who love the products as she does and are also passionate about selling it and creating their own businesses with it.

She is thrilled so far at the income she is making and sees that residual income in the future can be huge. She sees great possibility and feels within a year or two she can set the foundation for making six figures. I heard excitement in her voice.

As we co-created an action plan she spoke to me about her vision and passion for sharing products that create more health for people with the products she sells and I got her to also be jazzed about creating more financial freedom for her business partners, too. This was her gap - the missing link for her.

She left the call with the play work of completing the Goal Planner (a coaching tool from http://www.coachinstitute.com) and had a deep sense of being committed to her plan!

You go, Nancy!

Eddie the Entrepreneur

A client who worked in corporate America decided to own his own business when his company began going through some rough financial times. “Eddie” had always dreamed of being an entrepreneur and felt now the time was right. He had about 6 months worth of savings that he could live off of if need be and having his own business was a deep and strong desire for him.

His idea was to do consulting in the industry he left (he worked for an IT company). He already had great contacts in that industry and was well know in that sector. He put together an A-Z list (a coaching technique I share with my clients) so that instead of having less than 100 people he could contact, as he originally thought he did, he had almost 310 on his list.

Then we came up with a strategy to contact all these folks and exactly what he’d say and do. We created a 90-day action plan, step by step for him to get in front of people and present his background and his new services and ask for business.

His plan, if he hadn’t hired me, was going to be to create a brochure and business cards and send some standard letter he got from a book! Thank goodness Eddie didn’t do that! What a waste of time and money and what a lack of results he would have seen.

This week he contacted 11 people and he got 6 appointments. Now we are working on creating a great core story he can deliver to these companies to get their business.

Eddie is thrilled to be living his dream and to be getting clients without selling.

Romantic Ron

One of my clients, who I coach on his business, came to the session this week with a personal concern. He said he really wanted to add more romance to his life and felt he wanted to create something even more extraordinary with his spouse of 8 years.

We used this call for brainstorming and he came up with some cool things. Thought I'd share them in case anyone else would like some romance :)

He is going to plan a romantic weekend for them and surprise her.

One night each week, he is going to get someone to watch their kids, so they can go to dinner and a movie.

He is going to give her a massage at least once a week.

After dinner, when the weather is nice, he is going to suggest going for a walk together and maybe taking the dog, too!

He also decided not to badmouth her family.

And he said he would give many hugs and kisses daily.

How about YOU?

New Realtor Rita

This client, we’ll use the name Rita, is a new real estate agent who hired me to assist her in getting over her fear of rejection. As a sales coach and a former sales person and sales manager, I sure know what rejection feels like and I certainly know what the fear feels like, too.

She said during the past month she knew she had to make phone calls but every time she was scheduled to be making calls she found other things to do to avoid having to make those calls. Her lack of income showed she wasn’t making the calls and she was angry with herself for not making them. I call this “call reluctance” and see it often in sales professionals.

I did a visioning exercise with her asking her to create for me exactly what her dream would be on a phone call where everything went perfectly. I had her fully describe what she would say, what the person would say, what she’d be wearing, doing, feeling, touching and even smelling during the call. After that process I asked her to always, before a call imagine it, and script it in her mind, exactly as she intended for it to happen.

Next I asked her if at the scheduled times she is to make calls, she was writing in the names and numbers to be called. She said no. I asked her to put this in her palm pilot from now on. Every call was now considered an appointment.

Then I asked her what could happen that would be the worst thing on the call. She said they might hang up and then she laughed. I said to her that often we fear because we haven’t thought about the worst thing that might happen.

I shared with her that if she never spoke to people her vision of being a realtor might not come true. We talked about how much she wanted that in her life and why and what would happen if she didn’t make it in real estate. The fear of having to go back to a J-O-B with no flexibility was very painful. I asked her what did she fear most, someone being rude or hanging up or a J-O-B…. she said she got the point loud and clearJ

I also asked her if she found people interesting and she for sure did. I said if she made those calls to just connect with people, not be attached to the outcome, and to simply enjoy each person and find their beauty, would that feel better? She clearly thought so.

Finally, she told me that she gets “tongue tied” and confused about what to say. I asked her to create some scripts and write them down, that weren’t canned, or phony but from her heart and what she wanted to say. By having these she would feel more confident and get better results.

Many of these coaching concepts come from my world famous Selling-Without-Selling sales process which is offered as a complete package for anyone who sells anything at: www.selling-without-selling.com

Just Fired Fred

My client, we’ll call him Fred, got fired on Friday. He is of course upset and confused and angry. Natural responses that I have seen throughout my years coaching folks trying to work themselves happy.

Fred was able to vent to me, which he needed, and then we got into actions to move him through this so he didn’t get stuck in anger and self-pity.

He doesn’t like to journal but he does like to do mind maps, so he decided to do some mind maps about what occurred as well as potential opportunities.

He also decided to speak to his friends and family about it instead of feeling shame. I shared the statistics of how many people get fired or laid off and how often this happens in our lifetimes and now he felt that it was nothing to be ashamed of.

He also was going to look at his financial plan with his financial planner and make adjustments since he wasn’t sure how long it would take to find a job or start a business of his own. He is toying with both ideas.

He purchased my Career Options Within and Outside Your Profession e-book (if you want a copy it is at http://www.terrilevine.com/e-books.htm) so he could get really clear on his talents, values, interests, goals, vision, etc. and begin to shift to the work he wants to do next.

After he does this, I’ll help him co-create career goals.

Stressed Out Steve

Steve, we’ll call him, told me that between his job and the stress there and then coming home to his children and having to run them to soccer and dance and to karate, he has little time to relax and his stress level is really building.

He doesn’t take much care of his own needs as he is so busy making sure everyone else’s needs are met. His concern is that his stress is causing him to loose patience with his children and he feels he is not being a good role model for his children (he has full custody of his 3 children).

We co-created an action plan to decrease the stress. First, Steve is going to take breaks at work just to stop and breathe deeply to calm himself down. Next he told me that when he works out or takes a walk he relaxes. He is going to join Karate with his son and also try to walk each morning since the weather is now nice.

He also said that he eats a lot of junk food for lunch and also at work and often eats fast food with his children. He felt that if he ate healthier he’d also reduce his stress. He is going to eat more salads for lunch and also snack on things like apples and pretzels instead of the chips and soda he’s been eating. He is also going to pick healthier foods when they eat fast food. More chicken, more salad and less fries.

Steve also said he would focus more on what is working and try to lighten up and see the positive aspects of people and situations. He is also going to see if his neighbor across the street can take turns with him taking their daughters to dance as this would cut out so much rushing around.

New Job Jessica

I just love giving my clients these funny names :) “Jessica” just changed jobs. She was a top marketing executive in a healthcare organization and she became unhappy after 4 years and decided to go elsewhere. This week she began at another organization, still within the healthcare field, and wanted my help in settling in.

We began with me asking her to let go of the past (this comes right from my bestselling book “Work Yourself Happy”). This means letting go of who you were within one organization and allowing yourself to let that go so you can open up to a new experience with a new company.

We also discussed finding what was working and what was good and cool about the new job, the new people, the new office, the new environment and even the new ways of doing things. She actually started out slow, with only a few positive aspects and within minutes she was talking so fast I had to slow her down!

I also taught her a coaching skill (just as I would teach to a new coach), called tuning in. This is a very, very deep form of listening well beneath the words, as others talk. I want her to be deeply interested in those around her and less concerned with being interesting and talking about her old job and her old ways of doing things.

If you want to coach folks, like I do, I invite you to join a great free call. You can register at:

No Time Tara

Let’s call my client Tara, so we protect her real name. She feels she has no time to do the things she really wants to do in life. She actually hired me to coach her to become more productive and I had to shift her thinking before I agreed to coach her that it really isn’t about greater productivity, it is about creating more space.

Tara has been so busy in her executive career that she has missed out on so much of her life. She has all the books and tapes on time management and has taken seminar after seminar on this, but she says she still can’t manage time.

I say time is something you don’t manage. So today, we began exploring concepts around time, in her coaching session. She read me lists of to do’s she needed to get done and I did tell her something I say to audiences when I speak to them… “When all your to do’s are done that is because you will be to-done… in the grave”. We never finish.

After I heard the list of tasks I shared a coaching tip to have her schedule all her personal to do’s for one block of time. She picked Saturdays. Then, I had her pick a fun thing to do to reward herself when the tasks were done. Tara picked getting some water ice (which she adores!) and sitting outside on the bench enjoying it.

Next, as we looked at the tasks there were so many. Instead we paired them down to “If I were leaving the planet in the morning, what would HAVE to be done?” The list got smaller and she felt better.

Then we had some real fun. I challenged her to see what she could delegate from the list. She came up with hiring someone to cook meals, having groceries delivered, the lawn being mowed by a neighbor’s daughter, shopping on the Internet more, paying her bills on line, getting someone to clean her house and hiring an organizer to help her straighten up her office at work. She also decided to use the dry cleaner who comes to her office at work vs. stopping to drop off and pick up her clothes.

And then we made a list of 100 things she wanted to do before she left the planet and she is going to do at least 1-2 a week.

She changed her focus from getting stuff done to living her life now, as tomorrow we may not be on this planet.

She left the call lighter, freer and happier.

I just love coaching others and seeing how they learn a new dance that creates more joy in their life.

If you want to coach folks, like I do, I invite you to join a great free call. You can register at:

Procrastination

Thomas Pushes Through Procrastination

What a great coaching session! I couldn’t wait to post this one… my client, let’s call him Thomas, is the type that takes last minute actions or no actions. He has been meaning to exercise, to eat less, to get his office organized, to call his college alumnus buddies, and the list goes on…

In our session today I had him make a list for each thing he wanted to accomplish of a 2-minute physical action he could take to get started. Then, he picked the one 2 minute physical action for each one that felt good. We hung up and I told him to call me back in 22 minutes when he finished them all… he called in 57 minutes later, apologizing because he couldn’t pull himself away once he started! Yes, exactly what we wanted.

He couldn’t believe it…so, when you are stuck, get moving for 2 minutes and see what happens.

Man, I just love coaching people and seeing what magic they create and helping them shift their believes and make these changes.

If you want to make a living like I do, come to a great orientation call. Register at: http://www.coachinstitute.com/coachinginstituteorientation.htm

Sydney The Worrier

My client, Sydney, will call him, watches a lot of T.V. and always is filled with worry about what might or could happen in the world. He has a lot of fear about terrorism and pollution and illness and this has turned him into a worrywart.

Today we had our coaching session and he brought up that he is feeling very negative about the world and filled with worry.

I coached him to use strategies that will assist him to shift from being in worry to being in the present and focused on what is working.

First we made a list of what he is worried about. Then we looked at each item and I asked, “Is this something you can control or change?” We only kept on the list the items he could change.

Then, we talked about how to take a small step to change each item.

Finally, we decided to brainstorm about what he can do to turn off some of the negatives that cause him to worry.

He came up with this action plan and I think it rocks and may help some others, so I am posting it here: (nice work, “Sydney”!)

1. Watch less news programs and no TV news before bed.

2. Read fewer newspapers and scan the headlines.

3. Make a list of things he can control and take actions on those things.

4. When he feels worry, write down what he is worried about and at a scheduled time each day, he can look at this worry list and worry then – but no other time.

5. During his “worry” time, 15 minutes a day for now and less in the future, he can decide if the can make an improvement on the situation and if can he will take a 2 minute physical action to improve it, and if it is out of his hands, he will give it up and pray for resolution of it.

By the way, right now I am giving away 2 free chapters from one of my books as a special gift. You can get yours here: http://www.terrilevine.com/ExtraordinaryLifeBookSpecial.html

Sally's Success!

One of the reasons Sally is so successful is she doesn't let the grass grow under her feet. We only spoke a couple of days ago and already she has put one of the plans we discussed into action AND it worked.

She had a heart to heart with her Boss, after hours when he was less likely to be distracted or disturbed, and the fact that she was prepared to have an audience this way indicated to him that she was serious. So, for once, he listened.

Sally explained her process to him. It was one she actually learned from me in one of my training programs – Selling to Serving. It was considered a crazy idea when I was teaching it but now most people "sell" this way and it is considered "the" way to sell. Not in Sally's new organization though…

Sally told her boss she wanted just 3 months to do an experiment that would prove what she was trying to tell him, then he wouldn't have to take her word for it, the results would speak for themselves. Intrigued and realizing it wouldn't totally disrupt the sales department (and obviously being in a good mood!), he said yes.

So now, Sally has a handful of sales people in a small team she is developing and training in the Selling-to-Serving method. They are going to follow exactly what she tells them to do. The rest of the sales department will carry on doing what they've always done.

In three months time, Sally knows her small team will be showing increased business results and revenues proving "her" way works and with this irrefutable evidence before them, chances are good that Sally will have the entire sales department following her successful format.

She was much happier when I spoke to her on the phone… excited about this new project and glad she spoke to me and persevered with her new, stubborn, old-fashioned Boss.

You have to give new people a chance and you have to give new ideas a chance. Maybe her new Boss isn't such an old bear after all!

Have You Met Sally?

Interesting week. Had a call from an old client I haven't spoken to in years! She's just changed jobs and has a new employer… after only three weeks in her new role she's learned she's jumped from the frying pan into the fire.

I DO wish she'd called me before she made that decision!

I'll call her Sally – of course, that's not her real name. Sally is a very smart sales person and has worked her way up into a responsible position – she was actually head-hunted by the firm she is with now, who hearing of her success rate and that of the team she used to head, wanted her for their own organization. However, now that they have her, they want her to do things THEIR way.

Sally has tried to explain the obvious… that being that if doing things their way worked, they wouldn't have been so keen to have her on the team, and the reason she was so successful was because she did things a little differently. Of course, they don't care about that. They just want her to toe the line, do things their way, and somehow be as successful as she was in her old firm. This is actually not an uncommon scenario!

Sally and I tossed around some ideas and she's going to try them. So far she hasn't had any success "talking" to her boss about the situation, but if they don't want her to "walk" it may be in their best interests to compromise. Not that I suggested she threaten them! She calls her new boss "the bear with no hair" – let's just say that among other things, he's a little moody! She'll have to pick her time.

I told Sally that sometimes results speak louder than words and she needs to prove to them her system will work for their organization every bit as well as it did with the last company – and remind them, isn't that why they hired her? I suggested something else to her too…

We'll see! I'll keep you informed!

Days of Our Lives (Cont 11)

Gayle was still feeling the new office manager was working out and really enjoyed her personality. She was funny and brought humor to the office and the rest of the staff and the patient’s enjoyed her. She said that she realized the Universe works it’s own magic and that getting a new office manager is clearly what the Universe felt was right and now she understood that, too.

She had 3 private meetings with colleagues about her business and one of them said he might refer some patients to her. The other 2 were interested in what she was doing and agreed to come by and see her office.

What she wanted to focus on today, were her fears. She said despite the fact that she had over 25 private pay clients all enjoying their treatments, every once in a while she gets scared that she’ll have no patients. We discussed the fear and what it was related to as well as the reality of the fear.

She is working on a brain dump of all her fears and also creating positive visions to overcome them.

Days of Our Lives (Cont 10)

I returned from my speaking gig on Celebrity’s Galaxy cruise ship and met with Gayle today.

Gayle was excited to tell me she had a new office manager and things seemed to be rolling along there.

She hosted a gathering at her home for many of her colleagues and discussed with them her new center and the focus on alternative medicine that she has been a student of for about 12 years. Gayle said many were interested in hearing more and she set up individual lunch, breakfast and dinner times to meet with these folks individually to see how they can support each other and their patients.

In the meantime, Gayle shared that her private pay clients coming for the alternative medicine techniques had grown to 23 and she really believed this was going to work.

She also told me she was bringing less physical work home and her mind was able to let go of the financial challenges and work stress. She found more time to go walking, to get massages, to sit in her garden and to simply be with her husband.

In Gayle’s words, “All IS well”.

Days of Our Lives (cont. 9)

Gayle came to the call sounding more like her. She said she had 3 people lined up for interviews and began to trust more that the Universe wanted her to have a different office manager and was thrilled so many people rallied around her and gave her leads.

She felt supported and loved.

She wanted to talk about her fear of doing just alternative medicine. She said she feared that other Doctors would think she was not professional.

I asked her if she knew other physicians’ who made this kind of change. She said she knew of 3. I asked her to spend time with each of them over the next weeks. Being honest, discussing her fears. She said that excited her.

We talked about her current practice and her future vision during the remainder of the call. She could hear the passion and excitement in her voice as she talked about the future. I asked her to get back to those feeeeeeeeeeeeeelings and stay there all week long!

Days Of Our Lives (Cont 8)

Gayle had a set back this week and came to the call a bit “stressed” about the fact that her office manager resigned. This shocked her.

The manager, Susan said she really didn’t like the work. She had decided to go back to school to become a paralegal and was leaving on Friday. Gayle was also angry that she wasn’t getting full notice and had no way to have a replacement trained.

I asked her what was working. She certainly didn’t want to go there. I lovingly pushed her :)

Finally, she opened up to this and told me what was working and stayed in that mode for several minutes. I acknowledged her and asked her how much time she had spent thinking this way since she got this news. She laughed and said none and then said, “I get it”. We then dialoged about self-coaching and remembering to use the skills of what is working on her own.

We then talked about how to make this more right and what resources she had to make it right… she came up with: contacting hospital friends and other practitioners and asking them whom they knew for this position.

She left the call feeling better and focused on what is working and going to just replace Sue and move on.

She said she let it go and thanked me.

Life is chaos and life is change… the lesson? Expect the unexpected and stay in what IS working!

Days Of Our Lives (Cont 7)

Gayle continues to feel good about the office manager and the work she is doing to get money into the practice as well as to inform clients of Dr. Gayle’s alternative treatments that are private pay.

Gayle continued this week with more private pay patients from her alternative medicine focus and more have been scheduled. Repeat visits and referrals are occurring, too.

This week, Gayle spoke to 3 of her medical colleagues about the direction she was moving in and the types of treatments she was doing and shared articles, resources and tools from the non-traditional treatments she was having great success with. She told me, they were icy cold and she got fearful and never spoke to more people.

Today we discussed how to move through fear and I gave her my favorite coaching exercise to move through fear from my book Coaching for An Extraordinary Life. She enjoyed it and we spent time together doing belief shifting using a bridge belief tool.

Gayle said she felt less fear at the end of the session and she gave herself “homework” to talk to 4 more colleagues about her practice.

Days of our Lives (Cont 6)

Gayle arrived at the call in a fun mood and was laughing and I felt smiling, too :)

She told me she and her husband began putting into action the laws of attraction and were enjoying that and feeling good about it.

The new office manager was awesome and money was going to come in, Gayle said she could feel the difference and knew some of her financial worries would be relieved soon.

This week 2 more patients came for her alternative treatment and each paid her $90 and one scheduled another session and the other said he would call and do so. Both said they thought the treatment was great and were glad they now knew that Doctor Gayle did this.

The office scheduled 4 more appointments for these sessions. Gayle said it felt like it was building and gaining momentum fast and this made her feel a lot of joy, as she knew she was helping others and practicing a better kind of medicine and could do what she loved while working around managed care and Medicare.

This week, we decided on a plan for her to begin to share what she is doing with her traditional medicine colleagues. She is nervous, yet ready to go.

Stay tuned!

Days Of Our Lives (Cont 5)

Gayle always comes to the call sounding happy and energetic. She told me she got one of the tapes and books I recommend to better understand the Laws of Attraction and that she was really enjoying this new learning.

She spent time speaking with her husband about it and he is intrigued and also plans to listen to the tapes and read the book.

She continues to feel good about hiring the new office manager and she seems to be making progress in getting bills out and cash in.

She met with 2 patients this week doing the alternative treatment and both loved it, paid her $90 and scheduled another session. One of the patients later called back to schedule a session for his wife and daughter. Two more patients called to schedule these sessions from the phone calls and postcard-marketing program.

Today, for the first time, Gayle sounds like a believer. She sees a way out of managed care and Medicare and paperwork and into being fully present with her patients and practicing the medicine she believes in.

See you next time!

Days Of Our Lives (Cont 4)

Say hello to Gayle as she arrives for her next session.

Gayle told me she was feeling happier in general and focusing less and less on her fears and really feeling her vision more. She said her vision excited her and she was looking forward to how things would manifest.

She had a lot of questions on the Laws of Attraction. We discussed them and she understood the concept that what we think and feel about is what we attract.

Each day as she read her vision she said she began to believe it more.

She also told me that the paperwork in her office was a mess and they were behind in billings and between managed care and Medicare her cash flow was a mess. I asked her what actions she could take to move forward. She said she wanted to attract private pay patients for the alternative medicine she wanted to practice.

I asked her to find 1 client next week that was private pay and coming for one of her alternative treatments. She made a plan to contact her current patients offering this service to them and their families.

She was excited at the prospect and nervous at the same time.

See what happens next session!

Days of Our Lives (cont 3)

Here we are with my client, Gayle, once again.

She came to the call sounding happy and excited to get rolling again.

Today we discussed her bridge beliefs. First, she’d surface up all her fears and then she’d go to tell me about what the world would be like if she didn’t believe them and then we worked on coming up with something she fully believed that felt a tiny bit better than her fear.

We reviewed all her beliefs and spent time feeling the new bridges and enjoying how much less powers her fears had already.

Then, we spent the remainder of the session doing a closed eye exercise where she told me what life would be like in 2006 if she had a magic wand. She fully described her home, her car, her vacations, and her time with her “honey”, her medical practice, her garden, her voice lessons, her hiking, her travels, her yoga and other hobbies in great detail. We stayed there until she could feel, see, taste, touch and smell the future. I explained the principles of this Technicolor vision and how the brain can’t tell reality from fantasy (that is why we cry in sad movies) and that the Laws of Attraction say that like attract likes.

So, we worked on the power of letting the brain think the vision is real and going to work on making it happen and of the Universe be tuned in to our vision as it will attract whatever we focus on.

She was excited and promised to write and tape record her vision and read it and feeeeeeeeeeeeeeel it each day.

Come back for the next session… I can’t wait!

Days of Our Lives…(cont 2)

Back to Gayle…she came to the session ready to go and prior to the call she had emailed me her client prep form listing the fieldwork. When I asked her what was going right she said that she felt great, spent a great evening by the fireplace talking with her husband and watching some TV and reading and this morning she swam laps and was feeling energetic. I asked her about her fieldwork regarding her fears.

She said her list was “huge”. She had over 19 fears on her list. I made light of this and explained we humans have many, many fears so 19 showing on the surface was actually a small number.

She shared with me fears ranging from the fear of being overweight, to the fear of snakes, to the fear of having a car accident, to the fear of her husband dying to the fear of misdiagnosing a patient to the fear of loosing her business to the fear of getting cancer. For each one, I had her read me the ideal belief, like “I will always be cancer free” and then the bridge belief of what she could believe now that felt better than “I am afraid I’ll get cancer”. Each of the bridge beliefs were way too big and she didn’t fully believe them. We worked on this call to make those beliefs very, very small and fully believable. One example was she had down that she feared loosing her business. Her bridge was she wouldn’t have to close the doors. I asked her did she fully, 100% believe that and know that to be true. She said no. Then I asked what she believed that felt better than I am going to loose my business. She said I wouldn’t loose it for another year. I again asked if that was 100% true and she said there was a small possibility that within 10 months she might have to shut down. So we ruled that bridge out. We finally, after a process of trial and error, came up with, if my business does close, we have plenty of money to survive. She believed that 100% plus.

The entire session was spent on coming up with bridge beliefs so she now has some new thoughts to activate. We decided to work on three bridge beliefs that felt most up for her. The fear of loosing her business, the fear of getting cancer and the fear of her husband dying. For each one, she is working on re-programming her thinking, changing her energy and focusing on what she does want.

She left the call excited…stay tuned.

Days of Our Lives (cont)

Ok, so last time you met Gayle, my new coaching client. To bring you up to speed, Galye has a medical practice that is struggling financially. She is newly married and wants to spend more time with her husband, who she met while on a photo safari to Africa. He husband was also a physician who now works as a consultant to pharmaceutical companies.

During our first session, Gayle expressed that in general that life was good and she felt deep love for her husband and their life. They have a great home, live in a beautiful area, and enjoy wonderful vacations. She feels blessed with her life. She also loves her patients and helping them. She is passionate about helping people feel better and get healthier and loves learning alternative methods and using them.

Her vision is to have her medical practice become less managed care and Medicare and over time to have less paperwork so she can spend more time with her patients. She sees having a new space to do alternative medicine and creating a beautiful place to practice. She also wants to have more free time to travel, to visit her family and to be with her husband. She wants to think less about work and more about her own life.

What is not quite right yet is her business is making less money and she detests the paperwork. She misses patient contact and feels rushed with patients and doesn’t feel she is practicing medicine the way she wants to. She feels distracted from life being so focused on work and struggling with money issues.

She says she has the resources to create her medical practice differently and is excited to do so, but nervous financially. She wants my help in feeling less fearful.

We talked about her listing all her fears and not judging them. Her fieldwork before the next call was to write down all her fears, in all areas of life and all her negative self-talk. I also told her to think about what she ideally would like to see as her positive self-talk. Then to write down a true belief, very, very small that felt a little, tiny bit better than her current negative talk.

This is a coaching technique called bridge beliefs.

She is working on this and sending to me before our next session… stay tuned.
