Why Now Might Just be the Best Time to Start a Business

While businesses, large and small, around the world are still putting workers off, some continue to struggle on with limited numbers, too afraid to start hiring again just in case the worst is not over. Businesses are holding themselves back through fear. While this might buy them time until they are really sure the "recession" is over and it is safe to reinvest in their businesses and start hiring again, at the same time it is their very hesitancy that is holding back global recovery.
Likewise, entrepreneurial spirits are holding off starting their own businesses for the same reasons, or they feel the types of businesses they want to start are not appropriate at this point in time. Maybe they want the odds stacked more in their favor and are waiting for a sign that the crisis over and the day of the long lunch and luxury living is back.

This is no reason not to follow your dream and start your own business and lack of support or start up funds is no excuse given the number of government agencies lining up to help small businesses get going.

If this is your situation, why not consider what you might be able to do to your business idea to make it work right now. Maybe you can consider a different business, or modify existing ideas. Here are some examples of what has been achieved in the past during difficult times:

Towards the end of the Great Depression, two friends started Hewlett-Packard with just $538 and a lot of determination. During the 1957 recession, Jay Pritzker bought a small motel opposite the LA international airport… that was the beginning of what we now know as the Hyatt Hotel Chain. Southwest Airlines (US) launched itself in 1971 despite doom and gloom predictions at the time and found its niche by offering cheaper, no frill flights – it started off just serving 3 cities in Texas – today it services 66. And there are many other well known brands who started life during a recession or other difficult times and are strong, household names today, such as Johnson & Johnson.

People still need bandaids when times are tough. People still need to fly but maybe don't need all the amenities and are happy to save money on a no frills flight. Travellers still need a place to stay.

What do people need that you can provide? Think of an idea whose time has come. Or maybe you can modify an existing idea.

The point is if you keep waiting for the perfect time to start your own business, it may never come and you will have wasted precious time. Small business is the backbone of any country. Don't wait for large corporations to create positive changes in our economies – be the change you want to see in the world.

Or maybe you are hesitating because you don't know how to market and promote your business?
